MIAMI, FL – March 15, 2025 – Indigenous Whispers Inc. announces its official incorporation as a groundbreaking initiative dedicated to recognizing, honoring, and educating the public about Miami’s original indigenous inhabitants. This first-of-its-kind organization aims to preserve the rich cultural heritage of the Tequesta people through innovative educational programming and technological, interactive experiences. Indigenous Whispers Inc is a 501(c)3 corporation in the State of Florida.
Indigenous Whispers will bring to life stories passed from grandparent to grandchild adding color and the indigenous voice to efforts currently underway to document the contributions of the Tequesta Tribe, who inhabited the southeastern Florida region for thousands of years before European contact. Recent archaeological findings reveal that Miami’s history is far older than previously believed, with Tequesta artifacts discovered along the Miami River dating back approximately 3,700 years – predating even the Egyptian pyramids. The treasure trove of history presents an unprecedented opportunity to reframe our understanding of Miami’s ancient past.
Indigenous Whispers was conceived by two visionary women, Judith Anderson and Christine Michaels, whose combined expertise and passion for listening to tribal voices led to this innovative venture. Their leadership brings a fresh perspective to historical education and cultural preservation in the region.
“The Tequesta were some of the original stewards of the Miami region, yet the importance of the indigenous story including modern day tribes remains largely untold in Miami,” said Judith Anderson, co-founder and President of Indigenous Whispers Inc. “Our organization is committed to amplifying their voice, preserving cultural heritage. and creating meaningful opportunities for people to connect with this essential part of our shared history.”
LEADING THE WAY
What sets Indigenous Whispers Inc. apart is its pioneering use of augmented reality technology to create an immersive historical experience – the first of its kind dedicated to elevating and educating about Florida history. This innovative approach will allow visitors to experience the culture of the first peoples of Miami through interactive digital, family friendly stories overlays at significant historical sites along the Miami River, bringing ancient stories to life in their original settings. Bravent is the technical partner of Indigenous Whispers.
“By combining cutting-edge technology with historical storytelling, we’re creating a completely new way for people to engage with Florida’s indigenous heritage,” explained Christine Michaels, co-founder. “Our augmented reality trail will not only transform the perception of Miami but how we understand and experience the rich cultural tapestry that forms the foundation of Miami.”
