Indigenous Whispers Inc. to Honor Miami's First Indigenous People

MIAMI, FL – March 5, 2025 – Indigenous Whispers Inc. announces its official incorporation as a groundbreaking initiative dedicated to recognizing, honoring, and educating the public about Miami’s original indigenous inhabitants. This first-of-its-kind organization aims to preserve the rich cultural heritage of the Tequesta people through innovative educational programming and technological, interactive experiences.

Indigenous Whispers Inc. will bring to life the often-overlooked history and contributions of the Indigenous tribes who inhabited the southeastern Florida region for thousands of years before European contact. Recent archaeological findings reveal that Miami’s history is far older than previously believed, with artifacts discovered along the still-working Miami River dating back approximately 3,700 years – predating even the Egyptian pyramids. This treasured trove of history presents an unprecedented opportunity to reframe our understanding of Miami’s ancient past.

The organization was conceived by two visionary women, Judith Anderson and Christine Michaels, whose combined expertise and passion for historical preservation led to this innovative venture. Their leadership brings a fresh perspective to historical education and cultural preservation in the region.

“The Tequesta were the original stewards of the Miami region, yet their story remains largely untold,” said Judith Anderson, co-founder of Indigenous Whispers Inc. “Our organization is committed to changing that by bringing forward stories passed from grandparent to grandchild, preserving cultural heritage.”

LEADING THE WAY

What sets Indigenous Whispers Inc. apart is its pioneering use of augmented reality technology to create an immersive historical outdoor trail – the first of its kind dedicated to elevating and educating about Florida history. This innovative approach will allow visitors to experience the culture of the first people of Miami through interactive digital, family friendly stories at significant historical sites along the Miami River, bringing ancient stories to life in their original settings.

“By combining cutting-edge technology with historical storytelling, we’re creating a completely new way for people to engage with Florida’s indigenous heritage,” explained Christine Michaels, co-founder. “Our augmented reality trail will not only transform the perception of Miami but how we understand and experience the rich cultural tapestry that forms the foundation of Miami.”

NEXT STEPS

Indigenous Whispers Inc. is now launching its first major fundraising campaign to develop the technological infrastructure necessary to bring its vision to life. The funding will support the creation of the augmented reality trail, a hologram and future interactive exhibits, digital archives, and educational materials that showcase Tequesta culture, language, and traditions. As a tax-exempt nonprofit, all donations are tax deductible.

“We’re at a pivotal moment where we need financial support to build the technology that will make these important stories accessible to everyone,” added Anderson. “Through our fundraising efforts, we aim to create experiences that honor the Tequesta in ways that are both respectful and innovative.”

The organization collaborates with historians, archaeologists, indigenous cultural consultants, and technology specialists as part of a broader effort to pay homage to the Tequesta relics found on the banks of the Miami River.  The unique contributions of Indigenous Whispers are the technology and the tribal voice.
